A native of Iowa, Duane was educated in central Iowa schools and received a degree in Fisheries Management from Iowa State University in 1949. He was employed as a fishery biologist with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission in 1950. In 1960, Duane transferred to the Education of the Wildlife Commission and was on the staff of Wildlife in North Carolina magazine. He was Managing Editor of the magazine until 1970 when he was appointed editor.

Wildlife artwork has always been a major activity in his life and Duane completed over 200 cover paintings for Wildlife in North Carolina during his 30 years with the Wildlife Commission. He retired in 1979 to do wildlife artwork full time.

For the Village of Yesteryear, he paints wildlife subjects; squirrels, songbirds, fish on wood plaques, belt buckles, boat paddles and Christmas ornaments.

During the year Duane works on commissioned paintings only. He welcomes inquires and visits to his home studio.
